Lenovo C440 All in One

Published on: 03 February 2025 Category: computers

I received a nice all-in-one PC Lenovo C440. It was manufactured in 2012 and came with 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD and pre-installed Windows 8. It is almost untouched and looks very nice (the white "scratch" on the back is just some dust or paint and I will clean it).

Although it came with a spinning rust drive, it should boot in 20 seconds to the original Win 8. Now it has Win 10, but it will not boot. My guess is to reinstall it with Ubuntu, install KODI and use it as a multimedia device. I just gave it about 20 minutes and booted the live USB with Ubuntu 24.04.1. I went through the beginning of the installation process twice, but the installer failed at the same point, and then the media got disconnected, even after rebooting I had to unplug the USB drive and plug it into a different port to be able to boot from it.

However, this was a Meadia being used for another installation, so it is a bit odd. I will give it another try when I re-create the media with the latest revision of the installation iso and see what happens.

In terms of hardware, there are two USB ports on the side and two more on the back. The power supply is external and similar to a laptop. There is an optical CD/DVD drive and an Ethernet port (+ WiFi). The 4 USBs are more than enough, but there is no display output, so you are tied to a screen. This is not a problem for my use case, but I was expecting at least one display expansion. It also has built-in speakers, which are quite good, and I think they are better than some cheaper external speakers.

For now it is all I know, I will see what I will find later if I would be able to install OS on it.
